Wire nuts in alarm panels are a hack job, and the old guys who taught me are wrong
New construction job in Fontana last month, I popped open the can and counted 14 wire nuts twisted onto zone wiring with no tape, no labels, nothing. The builder's guy said that's how he was taught back in the 90s and it has always worked. Here is the thing, it does work until the attic hits 140 degrees in August and the copper starts creeping loose from vibration on the AC unit. I have gone back to three panels this summer where a nut finally let go and the homeowner got a trouble signal at 2am. I switched every splice to crimp connectors with a proper ferrule and I have not had a single callback in 8 months. Are you guys still twisting nuts in cans or did you move on to something better?
Man, this is the same story as old timers who swear by backstabbed outlets because that's how they always did it, right up until the plug falls out. We hold onto the old way because it worked once, not because it still works.
