My frozen fries turned into a smoky mess at 400 degrees

I was making a quick dinner in my kitchen and tossed a full bag of frozen fries into the air fryer basket. They must have been coated in too much oil because after about 8 minutes, the whole unit started billowing smoke and set off my detector. What's the best way to cook frozen fries without setting off the alarms?
