I used to think AI writing tools were just fancy spell checkers
About two years back, a guy on my team kept pushing for us to try one for drafting reports. I figured it would just spit out robotic junk. We tested it on a 50 page technical manual we had to update. The first draft it gave us was rough, but after we fed it our old style guide, the next version was shockingly close. It cut our rewrite time from three weeks down to about five days. I still do the final polish, but it handles the heavy lifting now. Has anyone else had a tool surprise them like that after giving it a real shot?

Yeah, that's exactly how it went for me too. Thought it would just make bland word salad until we gave it some good examples. Totally get what @susan130 means about the fancy autocorrect thing, but man, it's a game changer for first drafts.

Totally get that. My own first take was basically "fancy autocorrect." Now I'm just glad it does the boring parts so I don't have to.
