A data scientist at a conference told me most AI models are just fancy pattern matchers and I can't stop thinking about that
She said we're basically building really fast copycats, not actual thinkers, and it hit different because I was using one of those models to analyze patient data at my hospital. Has anyone else had a moment where someone called out the hype and made you question the whole field?

Pattern matching isn't really how people learn faces though...

Is that really such a bad thing though? From what I've seen, pattern matching is how we learn most things, from recognizing faces to knowing when a customer is about to be difficult. The real test is whether those patterns actually help people, like your patient data analysis, or if they just sound smart on paper.
