Had to refuse using low-quality thinset from a client
During a bathroom tile job, the homeowner pulled out some discount thinset they found. They asked if we could use it to keep costs low. I knew it would not bond well and might crack in months. I told them it could lead to a redo and showed them a reliable option. They went with my advice, but it felt like a moral pinch.

Discount thinset on a bathroom job. I'd expect that from a DIY video, not a client.

Riley's spot on about the repair costs. But it's not just cracked tiles. Cheap thinset can let water seep through, leading to mold and rot underneath. Fixing that means tearing out the whole floor, not just replacing a few tiles. So that discount stuff ends up costing triple in the long run. Clients need to understand it's about protecting their investment, not cutting corners.
