Our new core shooter jammed solid halfway through a big order for a local machine shop.

The maintenance team wanted to do a full teardown, but I convinced them to try a controlled heat cycle with the old propane torch first, which got it running again in about an hour. Anyone have a better trick for clearing a sudden binder buildup like that?

Nice save with the torch! Honestly, I've had luck with a slow pour of hot vegetable oil down the feed tube to soften things up. It's messy but it got me out of a bind last winter.

That hot oil trick sounds like a recipe for a bigger mess though. You're just trading one clog for a greasy, slippery pipe that's harder to clean later. Plus, pouring hot oil down there could damage seals or hoses if they aren't meant for that kind of heat. A torch gives you direct heat to the actual blockage without adding more gunk to the system. Sometimes the simple fix is actually the better one long term.

That "greasy, slippery pipe" problem is exactly why @scott.drew's oil trick can backfire so badly later on.
