A homeowner in Boulder called me out on my plank layout last year

They pointed out my starter rows were making a repeating 'H' pattern across their whole living room floor. I argued it was fine, standard stuff. But they showed me pictures from a design magazine, and the difference was clear. I spent a whole weekend practicing randomizing my cuts better, mixing lengths from different boxes right from the start. Now I lay out the first 20 planks on the floor before any glue goes down. It adds maybe 30 minutes to a job, but the results are way better. Anyone else get called on a visual pattern they didn't even see?

Yeah, I read something similar about hardwood floors. The article said that pattern you don't notice until it's too late is called "stair stepping." Laying everything out first is the smart move.

Ugh, stair stepping is the worst. I learned that the hard way with some tile in my bathroom. You get halfway done and suddenly it looks like a weird optical illusion. Now I'm a total convert to laying everything out first, even if it takes an extra hour. It saves so much regret later.

Honestly, I just wing it and hope for the best. A little wonky tile gives the room character.
