Had to choose between a $40 box store fan and a $120 industrial one for my attic. Went cheap and it died after 8 hours.

That's actually a decent lifespan for a cheap fan.

Read an article that said dust buildup makes the motor work harder and overheat. It basically cooks itself from the inside. So that cleaning tip is spot on. My old box fan ran for a decade because I took it apart every spring. Most people just toss them when they get loud and slow.

Yeah, "decent lifespan" is the key, @susan130. I've found cleaning the dust out of the motor once a year makes those cheap fans last way longer. It's a simple fix that most people forget to do.
