Choosing a dark fence stain caused a stir on my street
All the houses on my block have white painted fences, so when I stained mine dark brown, a few neighbors made comments. I think dark stains protect the wood longer and need less care, even if it doesn't fit the neighborhood trend. How do you handle it when your project goes against what everyone else is doing?

Wow, I used to be all about the white fence look too. But then I saw how my neighbor's dark stained one held up after a storm, barely looked weathered. My own white one needed a touch up that same year. Totally changed my mind on what's practical.

Hot take: Your wood, your rules.
Seriously, who cares what the neighbors think? Dark stain is way better for the wood. It lasts longer and you don't have to paint it every few years. Their white fences probably need constant touch ups. Let them talk, you made the smart choice.

Totally agree with that "your wood, your rules" point from @mary346. Went dark stain on my own fence two summers ago. Zero regrets, and it still looks new. Meanwhile, the white picket fence three doors down is already peeling and looks kinda sad. You made the right call for sure.
