Finally ditched jarred pasta sauce for making my own and I'm never going back

I spent years grabbing whatever jar of Prego or Ragu was on sale at the Safeway near my place in Portland. Last Tuesday I had a half-empty can of crushed tomatoes from a chili recipe and decided to just throw it in a pan with some garlic and olive oil. Added a pinch of sugar and dried basil because that's all I had. Let it simmer for maybe 15 minutes while the noodles cooked. Dude it tasted so much fresher and brighter than anything from a jar. I couldn't believe I had been settling for that sugary thick stuff for so long. Now I'm wondering if I should start growing my own basil on the windowsill or if that's just gonna be another thing I kill. Has anyone else made the switch from jarred to homemade and felt stupid for not doing it sooner?

My basil plants keep getting these little white bugs no matter what I try.

Honestly, I was the same way for years. Didn't think it was worth the effort but after trying it once I felt like an idiot for all that jarred stuff I'd been buying. That first batch really makes you question everything lol.
