That 5am folder purge on my laptop turned into a 2-day backup nightmare

I was deleting old screenshots in my Downloads folder at a coffee shop in Portland when I accidentally hit 'empty trash' on a folder with 4 years of client invoices, and after a full weekend of digging through Time Machine snapshots and a $60 recovery tool, I got most of it back but lost all the file dates, so has anyone else had to rebuild metadata from scratch after a cleanup gone wrong?

My buddy did that once and just recreated everything from memory, total mess.
