The gardener at the Tacoma community plot told me my tomato cages were backwards, and I argued with him for 20 minutes
I have been growing tomatoes in the same 4 by 8 bed for 6 seasons and I always put the wide part of the cage at the bottom, narrow side up. A guy named Walt who has gardened that plot since 1998 walked by last Saturday and said I had it upside down. I politely told him the wide base keeps the plant stable and he just laughed and said the cage is meant to go narrow side down so the branches rest on the rings as they grow, not flop over the top and snap. I stood there in the dirt with my hands full of suckers and felt my face get hot because honestly his tomatoes last year looked like small trees and mine looked like sad wet noodles. I still think the wide base idea makes sense for wind, but I went home and flipped two cages and left two the way I had them, so now it is basically a science project in my own yard. If the flipped ones outproduce the others by August I owe Walt a six pack of his weird dark beer. Anyone else been gardening the same way for years and had some old timer quietly wreck your whole method?
