My dog used to get 3 walks a day, now we do one long sniff patrol and he seems happier?
Two years back I had a strict schedule, 20 minutes at 7am, 20 at noon, 20 at 6pm, rain or shine. Thing is he spent most of those walks pulling me down the block so he could sniff the same 4 bushes he already knew. Around March I got sick and could only manage one trip, so I started letting him lead and we just stood there while he smelled stuff for 10 minutes straight. Now we go out once for 40 minutes and he naps the rest of the day like a rock, versus the old days where he'd pace by the door at 5:45 waiting for round 3. My neighbor swears dogs need the frequency for their bladders and routine, and my vet tech cousin says the sniff time is what actually tires their brain out. So which is it, more short trips or fewer long ones where they get to stop and read the whole neighborhood?
