My dog ate my left shoe this morning and then gave me the guiltiest look I've ever seen

Honestly I used to think dogs don't really feel guilty or understand what they did wrong, I figured people just projected that onto them. But then my own dog chewed up my favorite hoodie and gave me this exact same look, head down, eyes looking up, ears flat. It changed my mind completely because he definitely knew he messed up, he hid under the bed for an hour after. That guilty look is real and it's hard to stay mad when they do that.

Is it bad that I've trained my dog to feel so guilty about getting into the trash that now he just hides under the bed on his own whenever I'm in the kitchen for more than a few seconds? It's like he's programmed to think that if I open the pantry door, it's an automatic crime confession time. My hoodie collection has taken a serious hit over the years though. I've learned to just buy extras at thrift stores now because nothing is safe.
