Ballpoint pen vs pencil for quick gestures, pencil won by a mile

I spent 20 minutes fighting my pen on a 30 second sketch because the ink kept smudging and I couldn't erase, but after I switched to a plain 2B pencil the whole flow just clicked, anyone else find pen only works when you're not in a hurry?
