Poured coffee straight from the bag into my mug for 5 years, then my roommate in Denver showed me her $12 setup
I used to just rip open a bag of pre-ground coffee, dump a scoop straight into a mug, add hot water from the kettle, and stir it with a spoon. Every cup had that gritty sludge at the bottom and I thought that was just how coffee worked. My roommate in Denver watched me do this around 6 months ago and just stared at me like I had three heads. She pulled out a $12 plastic pour over cone from the grocery store and a pack of paper filters that cost like $4 for 100 of them. She showed me to put the filter in, add the grounds, pour a little hot water first and wait 30 seconds, then pour the rest slowly. The first cup I made that way actually tasted like coffee instead of dirty water with sand in it. Now I keep the cone on my counter and the whole thing takes maybe 4 minutes. Anyone else get shown up by a roommate and secretly be grateful for it? I still use the same cheap cone so I want to know if upgrading actually matters or if I should just keep my setup.
