My father in law has been recycling the same 3 dad jokes since 2019 and he is still winning our family showdown
I started keeping score at our Sunday cookouts back in 2019, and my father in law has run the same three jokes about kitchen remodeling every single week since then. Last week he trotted out the one about the cabinet guy who could not handle the pressure, and he got more laughs than my new material about the family dog. I mean, I get that repetition is kind of the whole game with dad jokes, but there has to be a limit somewhere. Am I wrong for thinking a joke stops counting once everyone at the table can say the punchline with you? Curious how other people here handle the guy at the cookout who never retires a bit.
Did you ever try just letting him have it? I used to keep score like you, tracking who landed what and when, and it made every cookout feel like a job. Then my uncle told the same fishing joke for the tenth summer in a row and my kid laughed harder than ever, because for him it was brand new. That's when it clicked for me. The joke is not really the point, the way he tells it and the groan from the table is the whole show, and your father in law has been running that show just fine.
