Hot take: longer dad jokes land harder than one liners and I have 3 years of a group chat to prove it
Everyone in this community keeps posting quick one liners about cows and ceilings, but the jokes that actually get groans at my Sunday table are the slow ones with a whole setup, like my 90 second bit about a guy who named his dog "Five Miles" so he could tell people he walked Five Miles today. My brother in law texted "that was terrible" and then repeated it to his coworkers the next morning, which tells me the payoff needs room to breathe. So who else has a long one that actually works, and are you willing to post the full setup here?
Lengthen the setup and the groan gets louder, that's just science. My go-to is a two minute bit about a guy who named his dog Five Miles, works every single time.
