That $80 writing software package I bought back in 2011 still haunts me. I was trying to finish this novel about a guy who fights raccoons in his crawlspace, and I got suckered into buying this fancy outlining tool with all these cards and timeline features. Spent $80 on it, plus about 20 hours learning the shortcuts and templates before I realized I just needed a notebook and a cheap timer. The thing is, the software actually works fine, but it made me focus on organizing instead of writing real scenes. What finally got me going was setting a word goal on plain paper, which cost me a buck at the dollar store. Anyone else drop real cash on a tool that just delayed the actual work?
