Hot take: I blew off load charts for 8 years til a guy in Duluth set me straight
So I ran a 60 ton for a while and I always went off feel plus what the older guys on site would yell up at me. Charts were for inspectors and desk jockeys in my head. Then a guy named Ray on a job in Duluth walked me through a pick where the boom was long and the radius kept creeping out on me, and he showed me the numbers said I was 1,200 lbs over on a 9,400 lb load. I about lost my lunch. Thing is I never came close to tipping, so my gut never told me anything was off, and that is exactly the problem, the machine does not warn you, it just gets light on one side. Now I run the numbers every lift before I even boom up, takes me maybe 90 seconds, and I have caught two more picks that were sketchy. Anybody here ever have a near miss that charts would have caught but feel would not?
