Dropped $600 on a wireless load cell system and it paid for itself in 3 weeks
Last spring I bought a used wireless load cell setup for about $600 off a retiring operator in Houston. I run a 60 ton Grove for a small outfit and we do a lot of steel erection where knowing the real pick weight matters more than the chart math, especially on those sketchy picks where the rigging is long and the geometry isn't clean. Third week I had it, we picked a spreader beam that the paperwork said weighed 4,200 lbs but the cell read 5,800. That difference put us over 75 percent on the chart for the radius we were at, and my old habit of eyeballing it would've had me swinging that thing out there like nothing was wrong. We re-rigged, moved the truck closer, and made the pick safe. I know $600 sounds steep when the company already gives you load charts, but that one catch alone saved a possible tipping incident and probably my ticket. Anyone else running a load cell on smaller picks, or do you just trust the drawings?
