A rigging handbook from 1978 put my jaw on the floor with one chart
I picked up a beat up rigging handbook at a yard sale in Fresno for two bucks and started flipping through it while my coffee got cold. There's a chart in there showing the strength loss on wire rope slings when the D/d ratio drops below 20, and past a certain point you lose over half the capacity. My old foreman on the tower crane crew always told me to just eyeball shackles as "close to the pin size" and that was the rule for years. Turns out you can be well within that eyeball range and still be giving away 30 percent of your WLL without knowing it. Anyone else run into that chart, and what ratio do you actually hold yourself to on a daily pick?
