Tried a cheaper toner on a whim, the shine difference surprised me

I usually stick to the same $40 toner brand but grabbed a $12 one from the supply shop last week. It left a weird film on the first client's hair, so I had to redo the gloss. Has anyone else found that price really does track with how the product sits on the strand?

And that weird film thing, yeah I've seen that with cheaper toners too. It's like they don't have the same slip to them, so they just sit on top instead of sinking in. I bought a big jug of a budget developer once and it made the color look flat, almost dusty, on the ends. Had to redo a whole balayage because of it. So now I just tell myself the expensive stuff is basically paying for the texture, not just the name. It still bugs me when I see the price tag though.
