A client at my old Boston salon taught me more about gray blending than any class I paid for
Everyone in this trade pushes full color when a client starts finding silvers, and I used to be the same way. Back in 2019 at a salon off Newbury Street, a woman in her late 50s stopped me mid-consult and asked why I was so set on covering everything up when she just wanted a soft smoke effect around her face. I fought her on it for a good 20 minutes, honestly, but she held firm and we did a low-ammonia deposit tone with 40 volume highlights instead of a full base break. She came back 9 weeks later and her grow-out line was barely visible, and she hugged me on the way out. I have been doing that client's method with 6 or 7 other people since, and it works better than the cover it all rule I got drilled into me in school. Does anyone here actually pitch this to nervous first timers, or do you still play it safe like I used to?
