First time a homeowner hugged me after a stamped patio job
Old guy in Akron watched me power wash and seal his 20 year old slab, then said 'that's the best it's looked since we poured it' and gave me a bear hug. Anybody else get weirdly personal reactions from customers on basic maintenance work?

That line about "the best it's looked since we poured it" really stuck with me. It makes me wonder if people just feel super vulnerable about their homes being dirty or worn down, like its a reflection on them somehow. When you come in and fix that grime, you're not just cleaning a patio, you're lifting this weird weight off their shoulders. They probably spent years walking past that slab feeling kinda guilty or embarrassed about it. So when you hand it back looking brand new, its like you gave them permission to enjoy their own space again. Those hugs are really about them thanking you for making their home feel like something they can be proud of again.

Read something similar about house cleaners a few years back. People talked about how they'd avoid having guests over or just straight up not use parts of their own home because of the mess. It's almost like that dirty concrete becomes this constant reminder of something you should have done but didn't. That first time you walk out and see it clean and bright, it must feel like getting a do over. No wonder they get emotional, you're basically giving them their fresh start.
