Bought the $400 laser level everyone swears by and it sat in my truck for 3 jobs
I finally admit I got suckered. About 4 months back I dropped $389 on one of those green beam laser levels with the fancy self leveling base, mostly because two guys at my supply house in Mesa kept saying they would never set forms without one. Used it once on a small sidewalk job, then it just rode around in my truck while I did what I always do, which is run a string line and eyeball my stakes like my old foreman taught me. Last Tuesday I was setting batter boards for a garage slab and pulled the laser out for real, and the beam was so far off level over 30 feet that I had to double check with my 4 foot level to see which one was lying. Turns out I never calibrated the thing out of the box, and the manual I threw away said you have to check it every time it takes a bump. So I lost $389 plus a half day on a slab I had to redo the forms on, and my string line would have caught the problem in 30 seconds. If you run one of these, how often do you actually check the calibration, or am I the only one out here trusting a tool I never set up right?
