Why does nobody warn you that the 'leave 10 minutes early' trick stops working after a while?
So about 8 months ago my buddy Dave, who has been riding the L into downtown Chicago for like 12 years, gave me this tip. He said just leave 10 minutes earlier than you think you need to and you will never stress about the train again. Sounded like gold so I tried it. First month was great, I was catching the 7:05 instead of the 7:15 and actually getting a seat. Then something weird happened. I started leaving 20 minutes early because 10 did not feel like enough, then 25, and now I am standing on the platform at 6:40 staring at my phone like a chump. The extra time just gets eaten up somehow, and I cannot figure out if the trains got worse or if I did. My other friend says the real fix is to set a hard rule and never budge, no matter what, but that feels like it would just make me anxious in a different way. So which is it, do you keep padding the buffer until you are basically living at the station, or do you pick a time and just accept the chaos?
