That moment your bike chain snaps on a steep hill

I was on my morning ride up the big hill on 5th Avenue, about a mile from my office. My chain just gave out with a loud snap, leaving me stranded in the middle of the bike lane during rush hour. I had to quickly drag my bike to the sidewalk to avoid the cars behind me. It took me 20 minutes to walk the rest of the way, completely sweaty and late. I keep a basic multi-tool now, but it couldn't fix a broken link. Has anyone found a good, small chain repair kit to actually carry with them?

Got a link that fits your chain speed?

A multi-tool is great for adjustments, but you're right, it won't help a broken chain. The real fix is a chain tool and a quick link. In my experience, a small kit with a mini chain breaker and a couple of master links is the only reliable way. I keep one in my seat bag, and it's saved me a long walk more than once. Just make sure the quick link matches your chain speed, like 9, 10, or 11 speed.

That's a solid plan for a clean break, but sometimes a chain snaps in a messy way where a quick link won't work. If a pin gets pushed out too far or a plate cracks, you might need to remove the damaged links entirely. A mini chain tool can do that, but then you're shortening the chain, which can cause shifting issues on the biggest gears. It's a good temporary fix to get home, but it's not always a perfect roadside solution.
