Shoutout to the diver who said torch cut the flange instead of grinding, saved me 3 hours in Galveston
Had a 30 inch flange on a riser in Galveston last month and I was planning to grind the welds off, which was going to eat most of my bottom time. A guy on the crew said just torch it from the wet side with a Broco rod and skip the grinder entirely. I tried it his way and finished the cut in 40 minutes versus the 4 hour grind I had budgeted. Now I keep a rod in my bag for every job, but some of the older guys on the boat say burning is risky on anything structural. Anyone actually had a burn bite them on a flange like this, or is that just old timer talk?
Man I've been burning flanges with Broco rods for years and never had one bite me. Key is getting your ground right and not rushing the pierce. I did a 24 inch in Fourchon last spring, same deal, skipped the grinder and saved half a day. The old timers say that because they grew up on oxy arc and saw guys wash out a cut. Wet side burning is different if you set it up right. Only time I came close was when my ground clamp was loose and the rod stuck on me. Check your ground twice and send it.
