My first salvage job in Mobile Bay involved a lot of guesswork and a rope tied to my ankle

Back in 2013, I was helping pull up a sunken outboard. My 'system' was a buddy on the boat yelling directions while I blindly felt around in zero vis. I finally found it after 45 minutes of pure luck. Now I use a handheld sonar unit for any search pattern, which feels like cheating. What's the silliest method you ever used before you got the right tool?

That ankle rope method is a classic move of pure desperation. I spent a whole summer in the Keys using a rake tied to a pool noodle as my main recovery tool, so I get it. @shanem37 has a point about the value, but sometimes you just need to prove you can beat the mud. Upgrading to sonar really does make those old struggles feel like a different life.

Actually, that rope was a total lifesaver.

Sounds like a lot of trouble for a motor... was it even worth that much?
