Hot take: I almost took a job sandblasting in a shipyard over a tender job on the gulf, and one nearly got me hurt
Two offers came in the same week last spring, a sandblasting gig at a shipyard up in Norfolk for $38 an hour, and a tender spot on a gulf job for $31 with a lot more time in the water. I took the sandblasting one because of the money and figured the diving part was the risk anyway, not the deck work. Big mistake, because I was standing on a wet grating in steel toes when a hose coupling popped at 110 psi and whipped past my head. I've never seen the dive crew so quiet, and the safety guy told me later that same whip can break a jaw. A tender buddy of mine on that gulf job spent 60 days in the water and came home with nothing but a nice tan. Anyone else here pick the money and learn the hard way, or was it the other way around for you?
