A tender in Morgan City told me to stop eyeballing my umbilical slack, and I finally checked the math
Last month I was working a shallow job off Morgan City and this tender named Ray kept saying my 100 foot umbilical was floating too much on the turns. I always eyeballed it because I figured anything under 30 feet of extra slack was fine, but he had me pull the dive plan specs and count it out, and I was dragging closer to 45 feet on the deep pass. How are you guys tracking slack on a short umbilical, tape marks or just feel?
Man, 45 feet on a 100 foot umbilical is a lot more than you'd think once you're actually in the water. In my experience tape marks every 10 feet are the way to go, since eyeballing fails you when the current picks up or you're focused on the work. Your mileage may vary, but I stopped trusting feel after getting yanked around on a similar job.
