Old guy named Walt stopped me mid setup and asked why I was trusting the display
About 6 months ago I was setting up a run of 4140 parts on an old Haas VF2 at the shop over in Pasco, and I had my offsets punched in from the probe and was feeling pretty good about it. This older operator named Walt who mostly runs the big lathe walked past, stopped, and just stood there watching me for a second. Then he says, flat out, "You gonna trust that screen or you gonna touch the part?" I kind of laughed it off but he grabbed a 1 inch end mill and told me to come back after I cut the first one. I did, checked it with a mic, and the real number was 0.008 off from what the display showed me because the probe tip had a tiny chip in it from somebody crashing the machine two days earlier. Walt just nodded and walked off. Not saying displays are junk, but now I always grab a mic on the first piece no matter what. How often do you guys actually verify the probe or just run with whatever numbers it spits out?
