Kept scrapping parts on a 0.003 taper until an old hand at the shop in Tulsa showed me my chuck was the problem
Three weeks ago I was running a batch of 500 aluminum spacers on our old Haas lathe and every tenth part was coming out with a taper I could not chase down. I tried everything I knew: new inserts, slower feed, checked my program twice, even blamed the bar stock. My scrap bin hit 38 parts and the boss started giving me that look across the floor. Finally Ray, this guy who has been turning handles since the Carter administration, walked over and asked if I had ever swept the chuck jaws with an indicator. I had not, not once, in four years of running that machine. Two of the jaws were off by almost three thousandths from a crash nobody bothered to tell me about. We rebored the jaws in place on a Monday morning and my taper vanished completely, first part in spec. Now I keep a dial indicator in my box just for the chuck, and I check it at the start of every big run. Has anyone else had a jaw issue sneak up on them like that, or am I the only one who ignored the chuck for that long?
