The recycling bin surprise that changed my whole approach

Last month I sorted my trash for the first time because my city in Ohio just switched to single stream recycling. I found out that a greasy pizza box can ruin an entire batch of clean paper and cardboard, which I had no idea about. That one fact sent me down a rabbit hole on the city's waste website, and I learned my town only recycles about 12% of what it picks up. Now I'm washing out jars and keeping food scraps separate, but I'm wondering if anyone else has found a smaller everyday habit that made a bigger impact than they expected?
