One week in March when my town actually cut its trash in half
Our city started a food scrap pickup program in early March and I signed up on the first day. Figured it would flop like the recycling bins nobody used. First week was rough. My bin smelled terrible by Thursday because I didn't know you had to line it with paper. But by week three something clicked. I watched my neighbor carry out a bucket of coffee grounds and eggshells instead of tossing them. Our street alone filled four green carts that Monday. The city says we diverted 9 tons from the landfill that month. That is real waste not going into the ground. I started weighing my own kitchen scraps and I was throwing out almost 4 pounds a week without thinking about it. Now my regular trash bin is barely half full on pickup day. Anyone else in a town that started this kind of program? Did your neighbors stick with it past the first month?
