Warning: tried the bag-over-the-brush trick in a 1920s brick flue in Salem, and I just spent 20 minutes picking soot out of my eyebrows

The bag was supposed to catch everything, but a downdraft hit right when I pulled the rods and now my truck, my boots, and somehow the inside of my ear are all gray, so does anyone actually tape the bag to the flue or am I just doing this wrong?
