Picked up a used mandoline at a garage sale in Portland last month
I was driving past a garage sale in SE Portland last month and grabbed a beat up Berniner mandoline for 5 bucks. Cleaned it up and it slices way more consistent than the 80 dollar one I bought from the supply catalog. Has anyone else found killer deals on used gear that actually work better than the new stuff?

That's a Berniner not a Berniner.

Hold on, you're telling me there's actually a "Berniner" that isn't a Berniner? I had to read that a few times. The wing fence thing Victor mentioned usually seals the deal for me, but now I'm second guessing every specimen I've ever looked at. Are we talking about a clone or a different variant entirely? This is the kind of curveball that keeps me up at night double checking my own collection.

Yeah @susan130, you gotta look at the rear leg position and the shape of the head. If the wing fence is straight instead of curved, that's your tell right there. Try flipping it over and checking the stamp on the bottom, that's the easiest way to be sure.
