Bought a sous vide circulator from a thrift store for $12

Figured it was broken or I'd get lucky. Plugged it in at home and it fired up fine. Threw a cheap steak in a bag and let it run for 2 hours at 130 degrees. The steak came out like rubber, not tender at all. Turns out the temperature sensor was way off by like 15 degrees. Anybody else ever score a dud from a thrift shop and try to fix it?

lol man that sucks. I read somewhere that older Anova units had a common issue with the temp sensor drifting over time. You can actually recalibrate them with a pot of boiling water and a known good thermometer if the sensor isn't totally shot. My buddy fixed his $15 garage sale find that way - threw a steak in at what he thought was 135 but was actually 150. It came out like a shoe. He stripped it down, cleaned the sensor with alcohol, and ran the boil test. Worked perfect after that. Worth a shot since you're only out $12.

Didnt think a boil test could fix those, but now I gotta try it on mine too alex307.
