My neighbor laughed at me for buying dry beans instead of canned

So last week I was talking to my neighbor Carol in the apartment hallway, she's like 70 and cooks everything from scratch. She saw I had canned black beans in my bag and told me I was throwing away money. She said a 1 pound bag of dry beans costs like $1.50 and makes the same as 4 cans, which run about $1 each at the store. Has anyone else made the switch to dry beans and found it actually saves you a noticeable chunk?
