Mom's elbow macaroni with butter vs my $4 boxed mac, the old way won
I stood in the aisle at the Piggly Wiggly in Valdosta holding a $1 box of shells and thought about the elbow macaroni Mom made in the 90s with just butter, milk, and a hunk of government cheese. I went with the box that night, and it was fine, but something was missing. Next week I tried her way, boiled the elbows soft, stirred in a tablespoon of butter and a splash of milk, and it cost me about $1.20 total. Yeah it is plain, but it fills you up and tastes like being nine years old. Does anyone else still make the butter and milk noodles, or am I the only one who bailed on the box?
My grandma made them the same way back in Ohio and she always said the government cheese was the secret. I saw a thing on the local news last month about how commodity cheese is still given out at food banks, and it got me thinking about that whole taste. A box of shells runs a buck or two now and the sauce packet never quite hits right. Plain butter noodles with a little salt on top is still hard to beat.
