Can we talk about the $1.50 bag of rice at the H Mart in Koreatown that changed my whole dinner game
Two weeks ago I was at the H Mart on Olympic in Koreatown buying dumplings when I saw a 15 pound bag of short grain rice for a buck fifty. That price seemed off so I asked the lady restocking shelves and she shrugged and said it was a clearance thing, nothing wrong with it. I grabbed one, cooked a cup that night, and it came out better than the fancy bag I'd been paying six bucks for at my regular store. Since then I've made fried rice three times, rice bowls with a fried egg and soy sauce, and a big pot of rice porridge that fed me lunch for four days. Adding up what I spent versus what I used to pay, I figure I'm saving around $8 a week just on that one swap. Now I walk past the regular rice aisle without even looking. Has anyone else found a staple food marked down like that at an Asian grocery, and did it actually taste as good as the normal stuff or was it just fine because it was cheap?
