Update: I finally figured out a better way to keep the chat flowing in our lounge
I mean, I started using a simple 5-minute timer to gently nudge people back on topic when things drift, and it's cut down on awkward silences by a ton. Has anyone else found a small trick that helps keep the conversation going?

Wait, a five-minute timer? Honestly that sounds like a hostage negotiation tactic.

My kid's dentist has a giant sand timer in the waiting room. It's for two minutes of brushing. Feels like you're being watched the whole time. Sand just pouring down. Makes you rush. Totally get the hostage vibe.

Okay the "hostage negotiation tactic" line got me. I read something about how timers can backfire if they feel like pressure, not help. Your five minute one sounds chill, but that dentist sand timer is pure stress. I saw a thing about using a quiet chime instead of a visual timer, it feels less like a countdown. Makes it a signal, not a threat.
