Unpopular opinion: my 15 minute walk to the corner store beats my gym membership and I have 4 months of proof
So back in March I started walking to the corner store on Juniper Street every morning instead of driving, mostly cause gas got stupid and it's only 8 blocks. First two weeks my knees ached and I figured I'd quit by April. Then around week 6 I noticed I was getting up the stairs at my apartment without huffing, and by month 3 my resting heart rate went from 78 to 66 according to my cheap watch. I still pay $39 a month for the gym and go maybe twice now, which is dumb when the free thing is working better. My buddy says it's just cause I'm moving more at all, not the walk itself, and honestly he might be right. Other side of it is the walk takes 30 minutes round trip with the stop, and some mornings that feels like a lot when I'm running late for work at 8. So which is it, is a boring daily walk actually doing the work or am I just fooling myself and the real answer is get back in the gym? Anyone tracked something like this over a few months and seen it stick?
My gym membership is basically a $39 a month donation to a building I drive past and wave at like an idiot, so you're already doing better than me. Honestly your buddy is half right, any extra movement helps, but the walk is doing more than he gives it credit for. Eight blocks plus a stop every single day adds up to way more steps than two shameful treadmill visits, and the fact that your resting heart rate dropped says it's real. The trick is it only works if you actually keep doing it, so the "running late at 8" mornings are the real enemy here, not the gym. Maybe keep the gym for the days it rains and treat the walk as your main thing instead of feeling guilty about it.
