The night a regular at my bar in Reno taught me more about the chatter lounge than any mod ever did
I was working a dead Tuesday shift at a spot near Virginia Street when this older guy named Ray started talking about how he ran a forum back in the dial-up days. He said the worst thing a community can do is let one loud voice run the whole show, and he pointed at the room and said look around, every quiet table is somebody waiting for a turn. That hit me because I had been letting the same three posters dominate the chatter lounge for months and I never noticed the newer folks just stopped showing up. Two weeks later I started a rule where every new member gets pinned for a full day, and the vibe flipped almost overnight. Anyone else ever watch a community die because a handful of names hogged the mic?
The bit about "every quiet table is somebody waiting for a turn" is a nice line but I don't buy that pinning every new member for a full day is the fix. Forced spotlight just makes shy people more self aware, feels like being called on in class. The loud names weren't really the problem, it's that forum software is built so whoever posts the most gets seen the most, and no rule about pinning fixes that.
