Clogged sink at 11pm in my rental, and the plunger made it worse

So my kitchen sink backed up last Thursday around 11pm. I live in a rental in Boise and the landlord takes forever to call anyone back. I poured half a bottle of drain cleaner down it and waited 30 minutes like the label says. Nothing. Water just sat there. Then I grabbed the plunger and went at it for maybe 10 minutes, and dirty water started coming up the other side of the double sink. I ended up pulling the P-trap with a bucket under it and found a wad of coffee grounds and grease the size of my fist. Took 20 minutes to clear it out by hand. Has anyone else had a plunger make a clog worse instead of better?
