Ran into a mechanic at a gas station who saved me $800

My truck was making this grinding noise and I was sure the transmission was toast. This random guy filling up next to me listened for 10 seconds and said it was just a loose heat shield. Tightened it with a hose clamp for $3 and it's been fine for 6 months now. Has anyone else had a stranger fix something obvious you missed?

Two hundred bucks adds up fast when you're already stretched thin and nothing's even wrong... you're out that money and still left wondering if the next noise is gonna cost you. Just seems like a lottery ticket you're forced to buy every time the car breathes funny. @blair597 got the same result as a free YouTube video and a socket wrench would've given 'em.
