Figured out why my seaming iron kept burning tape on one side and it was the dumbest fix
Been fighting this for weeks on a stretch job in a 12 unit apartment building. Every seam I did with the iron would get one side of the tape scorched while the other side looked perfect, and I could not figure out what I was doing wrong. I tried slowing down, speeding up, changing tape brands, even dropped $200 on a new iron which did the exact same thing. Finally my old boss Dave watched me for two minutes and asked why my iron was sitting crooked on the seam. Turns out the little shoe plate on the bottom was bent slightly from when I dropped it off a van bumper back in April. I did not even notice because it was so small. I took the plate off and tapped it flat on a concrete step with a hammer and now the iron glides even on both sides. Check your bottom plate if your seams are acting weird before you blame the tape or the heat setting. What is the dumbest small thing that messed up your work for way too long?
