Update: hit 1,000 board feet of trim on this one house and my arm finally told me why
Finally wrapped the trim on a 3,400 square foot house outside Boise last Thursday and when I added up my cut list I came out to a little over 1,000 board feet of baseboard, casing, and crown. I did not plan for that number at all, it just happened because the ceilings were 10 foot and every room had a window, so the casing alone ate up way more stock than I figured. What surprised me was how fast my miter saw technique got by the end. The first 200 feet took me two full days with lots of trips back to the saw, and the last 200 feet took about four hours because I quit measuring every piece twice and started cutting them in batches by length. My father in law has been doing finish work for 30 years and he was right about one thing, sharp blades and a good stop block save more time than any fancy tool. The other thing nobody warns you about is your shoulders. Around foot 700 my right arm started aching from holding the crown up while I nailed it, so I switched to a deadman brace on the wall and that fixed it. Curious if any of you track your board footage per job or if that is just a me thing.
