Warning: "culture fit" is just code for hiring your twins

Honestly I heard this for the 5th time at a startup networking event in Austin last month and it bugs me more every time. People keep bragging about hiring for culture fit but what they really mean is they want someone who laughs at the same memes and drinks the same kombucha. That approach got me passed over for a role I was clearly more qualified for, just because I didn't play their table tennis after hours. The numbers back this up too, a 2019 study showed cognitive diversity drops hard when teams over-index on personality. Tbh, culture fit should be about shared values like honesty and work ethic, not hobbies. Has anyone else been dinged in an interview for not "clicking" with the panel, and how do you call that out without sounding salty?
